In 1986, Doug Knorr faced a dilemma. Should he start an Advertising Agency in Detroit or in the 4-season resort town of Traverse City in northern Lower Michigan?
With a wife, 5 children and a love of the outdoors, it was a no-brainer. Traverse City, with its scenic beauty and small-town atmosphere was chosen.
Having sold hospital supplies and advertising time for radio stations, Doug had been asked many times by customers to start his own agency. When he decided to take the plunge, he knew his agency had to be different.
It had to be grounded in Marketing Principles. It had to grow by employing senior-level talent that could contribute worthwhile ideas to its clients. And it had to invest significantly in proven technology to ensure it could keep its clients ahead of any competition.
Doug’s first client was a furniture retailer that stayed a client for 12 years.
His first employee was a Media Buyer who left a well-known Detroit agency to live in northern Michigan. Soon, mega-creatives, media buyers and technology experts began making similar lifestyle decisions and began joining Knorr Marketing.
Originally housed in offices adjoining West Bay (where our V.P. moored his boat), in 1993 the agency moved to larger offices in the Old City Hall Building (also the original Post Office, circa 1904) in downtown Traverse City.
